Priest's Blessing: Calling on God's Grace, Prayer and Greetings
In the priesthood ordinance, the future priest receives the grace of the Holy Spirit to perform the ministry. It can be said that through the priest Christ acts: in order to enter into His Church we are baptized, He communes us, accepts our repentance, blesses us for marriage. But outwardly all these actions are performed by the priest, invoking the grace of the Holy Spirit.
General blessing while serving
During the service, the priest blesses his flock several times. He usually says “the blessing of the Lord upon you,” and overshadows the believers with the sign of the cross. But this is only one of the meanings of blessing.
The blessing of the priest is also a greeting. You must agree, it would be unethical to approach the priest with a handshake and hugs. Greet the hand can only be equal to the rank. The lay people usually bow in respect, stretch their arms forward and fold them crosswise, so that the right hand is on top. The priests, in turn, bless by laying their hands on cruciform palms or on their heads.
Often in the temple you can see that believers have the whole hand of a priest. But there is nothing strange in this if you know that through the priest in the temple is Christ. When we speak to a servant priest, we turn to a Heavenly Priest.See also: Father, Vladyka - how to contact a priest, a bishop?
Personal appeal for blessings
But sometimes believers personally seek blessing for an important thing for them. For example, someone is going on a trip to the hospital, taking an important exam or getting a job. He asks the priest to pray for him and call upon the grace of the Holy Spirit.
The priest usually asks first about the intention of the person, and then, if he does not see moral obstacles, prays for him and blesses with the sign of the cross.
It is not necessary to load the priest with household issues in the style of “whether to buy a washing machine” and “whether to take the child to kindergarten”. The specialization of the priest is spiritual problems, not the rating of kindergartens or the choice of equipment for the house.
The blessing of the priest does not save from responsibility
The prayer of the priest does not give any guarantee for the 100% commission of the plan. Much depends on the actions of man and the will of the Lord.
If it is helpful to recover immediately for the spiritual salvation of the patient, then this patient will be discharged from the hospital tomorrow. If God wants someone to pass the exam on the first try, even the most strict teachers will not be able to overwhelm this student.
Some Orthodox treat the priest's blessing like a magic wand: the priest blessed for marriage - and they lived happily ever after. The priest said to get a job - and everything went like clockwork. But in real life is not always so smooth and unambiguous. The blessing of the priest does not exempt from personal responsibility.
The father can only advise you, relying on your own prayer and life experience. But he may not know all the nuances that are open only to you. Therefore, the final decision on how to act is only for you. As responsible for the consequences.
In a monastery, the situation is different. The monks have a spiritual mentor who knows them well, has a great prayer experience and can save them from mistakes. Therefore, for the monks, obedience to the confessor is so important.
The laity are not under the constant "supervision" of a spiritual mentor. Moreover, many people have no confessor at all. And how then: to ask the first-on-the-father father blessings?
When the blessing "did not come true"
Imagine a situation: at a concert a guy met a girl, invited her twice for a date and realized that this was his “fate”. Decided to marry. Believer mom says: you need to take the blessing of the priest.Well, the guy went to the temple, went to the first father and said: "I met my soulmate, bless to marry." The priest, having ascertained the seriousness of the intention, blesses.
After that, the guy invites the girl for a third date and makes her an offer. In the first scenario, the chosen one refuses, and the unfortunate lover suffers and blames the priest for everything.
According to the second scenario, the girl agrees, they sign, at the request of the mother get married, but after six months they disagree - they did not agree on the characters. The wife actually turned out to be completely different from the one on the first date, and the husband finally showed the true “me.” She cooks badly, and he spreads his socks all over the apartment. They often quarrel, are offended, do not go towards each other. Who is to blame: a young couple or father? Can the priest's blessing save the marriage if the spouses are confused in their sins and do not want to change?
This is just one illustration of the fact that a blessing is not a magic wand that will fulfill your every desire. And not a miracle pill: accepted - and everything is fine.
Father’s prayer is good. But it will not help if the person himself does not want to make an effort, change yourself and fight sin
