Racial cleansing in Sweden from 1935 to 1976

October 9, 2015

wAXKMzvIn Sweden, between 1935 and 1976, more than 63,000 people were sterilized in accordance with the “race cleanliness law”. The law was repealed only in 1976.

Sweden was the first country in the world where the state institution of racial biology originated. And the idea did not come from Germany. The struggle for the purity of the race unfolded here, in the north of Europe, quite independently. The only difference between the Swedish universal welfare society and the Nazi society was that the Swedes had been doing this longer.

“I began to see poorly in early childhood. But parents did not have enough money for glasses. At school, I could not see, sitting at the desk, that the teacher wrote on the blackboard, but was afraid to say. I was recognized as mentally retarded and sent to a boarding school for mentally disabled children. At seventeen, I was summoned to the principal and given to sign some papers. I knew that I had to sign them. The next day I was sent to the hospital and underwent surgery. I was told that I would never have children. ”
This is the story of a 72-year-old Maria Nordin.

Maria Nordin is not alone. There are 60 thousand people in Sweden. All of them - victims of the state program of sterilization, which lasted almost half a century.

In accordance with the letter of the law, residents of the country were subject to sterilization, whom the health or social welfare authorities recognized as mentally or racially inferior. To fall into this category, it was enough to show “persistent inability to learn” or to have an appearance that did not meet the recognized Aryan standards of the Swedish nation. When the technology was debugged, they decided to expand the list of signs of inferiority and included “#sociality” in it. For most Swedes, the procedure for sterilizing mentally handicapped people was as natural as the rules of the road.

Operations ceased for the very reason that they began. The global trend has changed. The mentally ill ceased to be treated as second-class citizens. It has become generally accepted that their desire to be full members of society should be welcomed and encouraged. They tried to forget about the laws of the thirties in Sweden, but looking at the representatives of their nation - the homogeneity of types is striking.
