Herders in the Arctic

Herders in the Arctic

In the remote Arctic regions of Russia, reindeer herding is a way of life that has been preserved for centuries. We go to the village of Red Nenets Autonomous District.

Every winter, shepherds gather reindeer to the pen, select and slaughter weak animals. Such a "culling" helps to preserve the fragile tundra ecosystem and the size of the herd of deer, and for the locals to earn a living selling meat and horns.
