Extend the life of car tires

The condition of the tires that provide the car’s grip to the road directly affects the vehicle’s handling and the safety of its driver and passengers. Car tire labeling is the first thing you should pay attention to when buying them. Proper operation of tires not only reduces the likelihood of accidents, but also extends the service life of rubber, reducing the cost of buying a new one.

How to determine the degree of tire wear

According to current tire wear standards in Russia, the minimum allowable tread height for summer tires for passenger cars is 1.6 mm, and for winter tires - 4 mm. In Ukraine, this indicator is the same for all types of tires and corresponds to 1.6 mm. However, experienced drivers claim that it is better not to drive on summer tires, the tread level of which is lower than 2 mm (for a wide-profile tire, 3 mm).

Measure the height of the tread using a special device. If there is none, use the available tools: a match, a toothpick, a coin.By marking them and using the ruler, determine whether your tires are suitable for future use.

Tread height measurement

To correctly assess the condition of the rubber, inspect all 4 wheels and measure their treads in several places. Calculating the arithmetic average, you get a measure of wear.

The average service life of automobile tires is 40–50 thousand km. Aggressive driving style can reduce it by 1.5-2.0 times, and gentle operation and timely technical inspections, on the contrary, will extend twice.

Keep in mind that tires wear out even with little or no mileage. Over time, rubber ages: it becomes porous, it cracks, loses elasticity and cannot provide the required level of safety.

There is an international standard that sets the maximum service life of tires - 5 years. For domestic tires, it is impossible to exceed this indicator, but imported tires can last up to 10 seasons. It is in our power to ensure that both those and others maximally develop their operational resources.

Causes tire wear

Experts cite the following common causes of increased tire wear:

  1. Improper tire pressure.Norms of optimum pressure are contained in the technical characteristics of the car. In your interest to adhere to these figures, because the optimal pressure in the tires also helps to save automobile fuel. Experts recommend checking tire pressure every two weeks and remember: lowering it by 20% from the norm will shorten the life of rubber by a third. Never measure the pressure in a hot tire, as the readings will be incorrect.
  2. Sports driving style or lack of professionalism of the driver. Sharp acceleration, sudden braking, extreme turns without reducing the speed increase the friction force between the tires and the road surface, contributing to the rapid wear of the treads. Using tires in this mode reduces their lifespan by half. If you are new to driving, read the tips of experienced motorists on the rules of conduct behind the wheel, they will give confidence and change for the better your driving style.
  3. Late maintenance. On tires as in a mirror defects of a technical condition of the car are reflected. By erasing the tread pattern, an experienced car mechanic can determine which of the vehicle components needs repair: suspension or axle;
  4. Incorrect assembly / disassembly.Installation on one axle that does not coincide in type and size of tires leads to their deformation, damage to the chamber and the rim. During the dismantling of tires, workers at service stations advise them to put marks on them indicating the wheel on which they stood: PP - front right; Submarine - front left; ZP - back right; IL - rear left.
  5. Imbalance The imbalance of the wheels takes up to 20% of the resource from tires, that is, out of 5 years they will serve only 4;
  6. Overload. Manufacturers do not in vain indicate in the technical requirements of the load-carrying capacity of the car. They proceed from the optimal indicators, which allow to maximize the service life of the car. 20% overload threatens to reduce tire life by 30%. Need to transport heavy loads frequently? Buy or make a trailer with your own hands and solve the problem of premature wear of rubber.

Types of wear and their prevention

Restore damaged tires is impossible, but to prevent their premature failure you are quite capable. Below we provide a table where methods of preventing abrasion of rubber, depending on the type of wear, are collected.

Wear type Possible reasons Your actions
Normal (Fig. 1) Car operation (alas, nobody canceled the force of friction) Periodically change the wheels (Fig. 2)

 Normal tire wear

Fig. one

The high degree of lateral wear of the steered wheels is due to the significant load on this part of the tires. On the wheels of the drive axle, rubber is more abraded in the middle.

Side and center tire wear

Fig. 2

Wear type Possible reasons Your actions
Unilateral Violation of suspension geometry Check camber / toe
High speed cornering Abandon aggressive driving style

One-sided tire wear

Wear type Possible reasons Your actions
Bilateral and central Low or high tire pressure Observe regulatory pressure ratings

Bilateral and central tire wear

Wear type Possible reasons Your actions
Local in the form of multiple spots Imbalance Produce mandatory balancing during installation
Suspension failure Contact the service station and repair the suspension. Unfortunately, the tire will not restore it, it will have to be replaced so that the wheel “didn't beat

  Local tire wear

Wear type Possible reasons Your actions
Comb (saw) Friction, including when braking It is impossible to eliminate the cause, so minimize its consequences:
- brake smoothly
- periodically change wheels in places

Sawtooth comb wear

Tire storage conditions

The service life of tires depends not only on proper operation, but also on storage conditions. Tires are afraid of the sun, temperature changes and high humidity. Therefore, experts recommend:

  • After removing the tires from the car, they should be thoroughly washed, the stones stuck in the tread pattern should be removed and dried. Dirt ages rubber, so it’s better to get rid of tires.
  • It is necessary to store tires in a dark and dry room, the air temperature in which does not rise above 25 ° C. It can be a brick garage (the metal gets very hot in the summer), a dry basement or a cool storage room. It is important that there be no sudden changes in temperature, due to which condensate is formed, leading to the appearance of microcracks that are not visible to the eye. It is impossible to store tires in the open air under a canopy. There, they will be exposed to rain, dew, sun and wind, which do not have the best effect on their longevity.
  • If possible, place the tires for storage with the wheels. This way you protect the inside of the tires against dust and condensation.
  • It is better to hang or stack tires on disks; tires without disks are recommended to be placed vertically. Such storage methods will avoid the deformation of the rubber before the next season.

Tire storage conditions

Relatively recently, service centers also began taking tires for storage. The service is called "Hotel for Tires" and is suitable for those motorists who are willing to pay for the safety of their rubber.
