Audi has built a lighter and more powerful version of the TT coupe
Engineers tried to make it easier to almost all the main elements of the car, including the engine, chassis and body.
Audi is preparing for the premiere of a more powerful and lightweight version of the TT sports coupe. The premiere of the all-wheel drive concept car called the Audi TT ultra quattro concept is scheduled to take place in early May as part of the Wörthersee Tour 2013 festival.
The car is built on the basis of the Audi TTS serial coupe and is equipped with a 2-liter turbo engine of the TFSI series, which produces 310 hp. The torque of the power unit reaches 400 Nm at 1900-5000 rpm. Due to a number of design changes, the engineers managed not only to improve the performance of the motor (power increased by 38 hp, torque - by 50 Nm), but also reduce its weight by 25 kg. As a gearbox used 6-speed "mechanics".
In the design of the body of the concept car, light materials are widely used, which has made it possible to reduce the overall weight of the car. In particular, with the use of carbon fiber, a central tunnel, a roof and a frame-spreader in the rear part of the cabin are made, and magnesium is used in the floor and door hinge construction.Racks of the rear wing are made of aluminum, and the wing itself is made of carbon fiber. The refusal of side mirrors has also made it possible to reduce weight - they were replaced by cameras that transmit the image to the salon.
The design of the front brake mechanisms used ceramic discs and aluminum calipers. The wheels are made of aluminum and carbon fiber, which reduced the weight by another 20 kg. Interestingly, the suspension springs were made not of steel, but of glass fiber reinforced plastic. Titanium is used in the exhaust pipes.
In the cabin there are sports seats from the Audi R8 GT sports car, which are lighter than the standard 22 kg. A rechargeable lithium-ion battery weighs slightly less than 4 kg, but for better weight distribution it was placed under the driver's seat. However, the engineers did not abandon the air conditioner, power windows and electromechanical "parking brake."
Compared with the usual Audi TTS, the total weight of the concept has decreased by 300 kg and now amounts to 1111 kg, and only 3.6 kg of weight per 1 horsepower is almost like sports cars. As a result, the Audi TT ultra quattro can accelerate to 100 km / h in 4.2 seconds (1.2 seconds faster than the Audi TTS) and reach a maximum speed of 280 km / h (the Audi TTS - 250 km / h).
Audi does not exclude that some technical solutions applied to the Audi TT ultra quattro concept will be continued in the limited edition production models.
